Poet, translator, and professor of natural philosophy and mathematics. Born in London
to a Jewish family. Educated at the University of London, the Liverpool Royal Institution,
Trinity College, Dublin, and St John’s College, Cambridge, but was not awarded his
degrees from Cambridge due to his religion. Became a fellow in the Royal Society in
1839. Briefly moved to the United States to accept a position as the professor of
mathematics at the University of Virginia (1841-1842). Returned to England and published
several papers on the subject of mathematics, and eventually became the professor
of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich from 1855 to 1870. Became
a member of the Athenaeum in 1856. Author of The Laws of Verse (1870). Moved back to the United States to accept the position of professor of mathematics
at John Hopkins University from 1876-1883. Returned to England and became the professor
