Poet, teacher and Catholic clergyman. Born in Amelia County, Virginia. Educated by a private tutor. Worked as a clerk to Captain John Wilkinson during the American Civil War and frequently travelled to Bermuda and the Bahamas. Imprisoned in Maryland (1864). Lived in Baltimore, Wisconsin, and Virginia after the war. Converted to Catholicism. Ordained a priest in 1884. English teacher at Saint Charles College, Maryland, until he was no longer able to work due to his eyesight. Contributed to Harper’s Monthly. Biographical information: ANB. (CC)
