Poet and classical scholar. Born at sea aboard father’s ship, the Georgiana. Matriculated
from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1848. Became classics master at the Edinburgh
Academy in 1852, where Robert Louis Stevenson was among his students. Became chair
of Greek at Queen’s College, Galway, in 1863. Delivered Lowell lectures on philosophy
and education in Boston in 1867, eventually published as Wayside Thoughts (1868). Published a record of his teaching years in Day Dreams of a Schoolmaster (1864-1865). Children’s poetry volumes: Nursery Nonsense, or, Rhymes without Reason (1863-1864) and Fun and Earnest, or, Rhymes with Reason (1865). Married first to Fanny Gamgee (1838-1860), and then Amy Drury (1866-1902).
