G. O. Trevelyan.Born at Rothley Temple, Leicestershire. Only son of Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan, first baronet. Succeeded his father in the baronetcy in 1886. Attended Harrow School in 1851, and won a number of prizes for his poetry. Educated in classics at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1857. Wrote satiric verse while at Cambridge, including Horace at the University of Athens (1861). Spent several years as a civil servant in India. Held a number of positions in William Gladstone’s government, including Chief Secretary of Ireland, Secretary for Scotland, and Chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster. Married Caroline Phillips on 29 September 1869. Published poems and prose in Macmillan’s, including the satirical verse drama Ladies in Parliament (1867).
