Poet, schoolmaster, translator, and playwright. Born in Holy Rood, Southampton. Educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and became a fellow from 1526-1529. Moved to London in 1533. Became headmaster of Eton College in 1534 and was imprisoned later that year for a robbery committed by his students. Became a scholar under the patronage of Queen Katherine in 1543. Translator of The Paraphrase of Erasmus upon the New Testament and A Discource or Traictise of Petur Martyr (1550). Author of several plays including the comedy Ralph Roister Doister (1556).
