Poet and politician. Educated at King’s College, Cambridge, and Lincoln’s Inn. Married twice, Anne Banks in 1631 and Mary Bressy in 1644. MP for Ilchester, Chipping Wycombe, and Amersham (1624-1629), and then in the Short and Long Parliaments in 1640. Imprisoned (1643) and exiled (1644) for his role as a key instigator of “Waller’s plot,” an attempt to forcibly take the city of London for Charles I. Returned to England in 1652. Author of poems celebrating both Cromwell in Panegyrick to my Lord Protector (1655) and Charles II in To the King, upon his Majesties Happy Return (1660). MP for Hastings (1661-1685).
