Poet, essayist, politician, and fourth earl of Orford. Born in Piccadilly, Westminster. Son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole and Catherine (née Shorter). Childhood friends with Thomas Gray. Educated at Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge. Lived in London for most of his life. Worked as a politician in various posts, including MP for Callington, Castle Rising, and King’s Lynn. Never married. Publications include The Castle of Otranto (1764), considered to be one of the earliest Gothic novels, and an array of historical and political texts published throughout his life.
