Poet and historian. Born in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Son of the poet Thomas Warton
(c.1688-1745). Educated at Trinity College, Oxford, and elected perpetual fellow in
1753. Professor of Poetry at Oxford (1757-1767). Member of the London Society of Antiquaries
and the Literary Club. Became Poet Laureate in 1785. Close friends with Samuel Johnson.
Author of The History of English Poetry, From the Close of the Eleventh to the Commencement
