Working-class poet. Born in Rochdale, Lancashire. Son of Edward Waugh and Elizabeth (née Hawkward, son of William Howarth). Worked as an apprentice to printer and bookseller Thomas Holden, becoming a journeyman printer until he began writing full time, delivering public readings to supplement his income. Married Mary Ann Hill on 11 May 1847. Achieved local celebrity with his writings and was known as the Laureate of Lancashire or the Lancashire Burns among the community.
