A. Werner.Born in Trieste and travelled widely with her family as a child. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge University (1878-80). Lived in Africa (1893-96, 1911-13). In 1921 appointed Professor of Swahili and Bantu at London University. Author of A Time and Tides: Ballads and Lyrics of East and West (1886).
