G. J. Whyte Melville.Born in Strathkinness, Fife. Son of Major John Whyte-Melville and his wife, Catherine Anne Sarah Osborne. Educated at Eton College. Worked as an officer of the 93rd highlanders and was promoted to captain by the time he retired in 1849, briefly serving again in the Crimean War six years later. Married Charlotte Hanbury on 7 August 1847. Author of over two dozen novels, typically containing adventurous plots inspired by experiences in the military and hunting game.
