Poet, magazine editor, journalist, novelist, and playwright. Born in Portland, Maine. Educated at Yale University. Contributed poetry to the Boston Advertiser. Founded the American Monthly Magazine in 1829, moving to New York City after its failure in 1831. Co-founded the New York Mirror and spend five years in Europe as their correspondent. Co-founded several other periodicals and magazines between 1839 and 1846, including the Evening Mirror and Home Journal. Contributed to Godey’s and Graham’s. Married twice, Mary Stace in 1835 and Cornelia Grinnell in 1846. Worked as a correspondent in Washington, D.C., for the Home Journal during the Civil War. Biographical information: ANB. (KH, CC)
