Miniature painter and photographer. Apprenticed to a carpenter and house builder in Banff, Scotland, at age 12, but in 1846 moved to Edinburgh to train as an artist with Edward Henry Corbould. Began a photographic and portrait studio in Aberdeen in 1853 with John Hay, and quickly earned the patronage of Queen Victoria. Produced many photographs of popular tourist views in Britain, and especially in Scotland, and from the 1860s specialized in photographic prints for the mass market. Biographical information: ODNB.
