Working-class poet and miner. Son of a collier. Attended parish school until aged 9, then sent to work in the mine. His 1862 poetry volume, published by William Blackwood, financed his attendance at the Glasgow School of Mines, after which he became a colliery manager. Second wife was a descendent of Robert Burns. Author of Poems and Songs (1862), Annie Weir, and Other Poems (1866), Lily Neil, A Poem (1879), Poems and Songs (1883), Selected Poems (1890).
