Poet and playwright. Educated at St. Salvator, a Jesuit college, with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but left to pursue his artistic interests. Learned French, English, Italian and Spanish. Joined the Weimar Court Theatre in 1803. Married Amalie Becker on 26 December 1804. Became a lead actor at the Berlin Royal Theatre in 1816. Friends with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
