of becoming a clergyman, but left to pursue his artistic interests. Learned French,
English, Italian and Spanish. Joined the Weimar Court Theatre in 1803. Married Amalie
Becker on 26 December 1804. Became a lead actor at the Berlin Royal Theatre in 1816.
