Poet, diplomat, politician, Church of England clergyman, and hymn writer. Born in Kent. Educated at Winchester College, New College, and Queen’s College, Oxford. Lifelong friends with John Donne. Travelled the continent from 1589-1594. Knighted in 1604. Ambassador to Venice, Savoy, and the Dutch republic. Elected MP for Sandwich (1625). Ordained as a deacon in 1627. Author of the essay The State of Christendom (1657), Elements of Architecture Collected by Henry Wotton, Knight, from the Best Authors & Examples (1624), and several hymns including On the Birth of Prince Charles (1630).
