Poet, translator, and civil servant. Pseudonym: A Best Man. Born at Cookham, Barts. Son of Sir George Young (2nd Baronet, 1797-1848). Nephew of poet Winthrop Mackworth Praed. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Succeeded to the title in 1848. Awarded a Trinity fellowship at his third attempt. Appointed as a Royal Commissioner in April 1870. Married Alice Eacy on 10 October 1871. Unsuccessfully stood for election twice as a Liberal Member of Parliament in 1868 and 1874. Supported women’s access to higher education. Appointed as a Charity Commissioner in 1882, and then Chief Charity Commissioner for England and Wales in 1903, retiring in 1906.
