Orientalist, travel writer, and translator. Pseudonym: Marcus Paulus Venetus, M. P. V. Educated at Edinburgh high school and (briefly) at University College, London. Entered East India Company’s Military College in 1837, then went on assignment to India with the Bengal Engineers. Served in the Anglo-Sikh wars. Retired from the army in 1862 and eventually moved with his wife and daughter to Sicily, returning to England after the death of his wife in 1875 and serving on the Council of India. Compiled, with Arthur C. Burnell, an Anglo-Indian dictionary (Hobson-Jobson, 1886). Biographical information: ODNB.(AC)
