Travelled to Spain and published an account of his journey as Las Alforjas (1853), republished as The Bridle Roads of Spain in 1856. Contributed to Daily News (as a correspondent in Crimea during the war) and Fraser’s Magazine. Married Mary Anne Frances Wilmot on 11 September 1860. Settled with his family in Algiers in 1870.
