Oriental scholar, translator, and editor. Born in Ipswich, Suffolk. Married Elizabeth Susan Charlesworth on 23 October 1847. Educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford. Moved to India in 1856 and became Professor of English history at Presidency College, Calcutta, and Principal of the Sanskrit College in 1858. Secretary of the Vernacular Literature Society. Returned to England in 1864 due to ill health. Appointed professor of Sanskrit at the University of Cambridge (1867-1903). Co-founder of the Cambridge Philological Society. Contributed to Asiatic Journal, Westminster Review, Fraser’s Magazine, Calcutta Review, and Journal of Philology. Friends with Edward FitzGerald. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
