India in 1856 and became Professor of English history at Presidency College, Calcutta,
and Principal of the Sanskrit College in 1858. Secretary of the Vernacular Literature
Society. Returned to England in 1864 due to ill health. Appointed professor of Sanskrit
at the University of Cambridge (1867-1903). Co-founder of the Cambridge Philological
