Poet, horseman, police officer, and politician. Born in Fayal, Azores. Father was a retired Bengal cavalry officer. Emigrated to Australia from England in November 1853, and began a short career as a mounted police officer, leaving in November 1855 to become a horse breaker and steeple-chase rider. Married a Glaswegian, Margaret Park, on 20 October 1862. Elected member of South Australian Parliament in 1865, resigning in 1866. Author of poetry volumes Ashtaroth (1867), Sea Spray and Smoke Drift (1867), Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes (1870). Died by suicide the day after his 1870 poetry volume was published.
