Painter. Born in Maldon, Essex. Studied at the Royal Academy Schools. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution, and in Paris at the 1855 Universal Exhibition. Married Kezia Mary Dedman on 19 March 1833. Specialized in paintings of Italian subjects and settings, especially relating to Romantic literature. Converted to Catholicism in the 1830s. Appointed master of the figure at the Government School of Design. Elected Royal Academician in 1846. Travelled to France (1853-1854). Member of the Institut de France (Académie des Beaux Arts).
