Poet and politician. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Began his career in politics as a Whig MP for Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1826, then for West Riding, after the Reform Bill passed in 1832, a seat he held on and off until 1848. Became Seventh Earl of Carlisle upon his father’s death in 1848 and moved to the House of Lords. Previously used the courtesy title of Lord Morpeth. Received the Order of the Garter in 1855.
