Painter, engraver, and illustrator. Born in Manchester. Worked as a portrait painter and drawing-master. Contributed to Heath’s Picturesque Annual. Illustrated several novels by Sir Walter Scott. Exhibited at the Royal Manchester Institution, Royal Academy, and British Institution. Member of the Manchester Academy. Co-founder of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, of which he was president from 1864-1877. Elected member of the New Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1841. Biographical information: ODNB.
