Poet, historian and journalist, particularly known for his songs in Scots and anti-Corn Law poems (collected in the immensely successful Voices from the Crowd [1847]). Pseudonym: C. M. Worked for the Morning Chronicle, was editor of Glasgow Argus (1844-1847), then worked for Illustrated London News (1848-1859), and later became New York correspondent for The Times (1862-1865) during the American Civil War.
