G. M.Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Married twice: Mary Ellen Nicolls on 9 August 1849, and Marie Vulliamy on 20 September 1864. Worked as a publisher’s reader for Chapman and Hall (1860-1890). Became editor of The Fortnightly in 1867 and president of the Society of Authors in 1892. Connected with major figures in literary and artistic circles including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Algernon Charles Swinburne, and Frederick Sandys. Also friends with the Duff Gordon family, and corresponded for decades with their daughter Janet. Poetry volumes include Modern Love (1862), Ballads and Poems of Tragic Life (1887).
