Poet, publisher, journalist, biographer, and editor. Pseudonym: John Oldcastle. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear. Author of several biographies on John Henry Newman and Pope Leo XIII. Contributed to many periodicals including Athenaeum, the Academy, the Illustrated London News, and the Nineteenth Century. Converted to Catholicism in 1870. Married Alice Thompson (Alice Meynell) in 1877 and co-founded the periodical The Pen with her. Founder and editor of Merry England. Editor of the Weekly Register. Awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1943.
