Poet and politician. Pseudonym: Hⁿ. Alternative signature: R. Monckton Milnes. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, London University, and in Bonn, Germany. Author of One Tract More (1841). Contributed to Hood’s Magazine and the Edinburgh Review. Friends with Walter Savage Landor and was a well connected socialite who hosted many major figures to his famous breakfasts. Elected Tory MP for Pontefract (1837-1863). Married the Hon. Annabella Hungerford Crewe in 1851. Founder of the Philobiblon Society (1853). Became Baron Houghton in 1863.
