Theologian, Catholic cardinal, and poet. Born in London. Educated at Trinity and Oriel Colleges, Oxford. Ordained in the Church of England (1824), and was an influential member of the Oxford Movement before controversially joining the Catholic church in 1845, becoming ordained as a Catholic priest in 1847. Published a series of poems in the British Magazine (1833), and The Dream of Gerontius in The Month (1865). Author of Tracts for the Times (1833-1841) and Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1864). Founded the Catholic University of Ireland in 1854. Became a cardinal in 1879, and was canonized as a Catholic saint in 2019. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
