Poet and court official. Born in Yorkshire. Served in the army in 1820-1855. Worked as the private secretary to his brother while he was the Governor General of Jamaica and Lords Lieutenant of Ireland (1832-1839). Married Margaret Anne Bathurst on 25 June 1835. Held several important positions in the Royal Household, including treasurer and private secretary to Prince Albert (1847), keeper of the queen’s privy purse (1849), and (unofficially) the queen’s private secretary. Received the Companion of the Order of Bath (1853) and Knight Commander of the Order of Bath (1858). Continued to serve the Prince of Wales in various positions in the Royal Household until 1864.
