Written in Dust.
I sat one morning sadly,1
Upon the ocean’s strand ;2
And with my staff I figured3
A heart, deep in the sand.4
My thoughts were straying wildly5
O’er years long past and gone,6
I marked not that the billows7
Were madly rushing on.8
One crested wave came foaming,9
And swept the heart away ;10
No trace was left remaining,11
Nought but the watery spray.12
My own sad fate I read there,13
And hastened to depart ;14
My bitter tears fast streaming15
To think of that lost heart.16
