My Will.

Since I have no lands or houses,1
And no hoarded golden store,2
What can I leave those who love me3
When they see my face no more ?4
Do not smile ; I am not jesting,5
Though my words sound gay and light,6
Listen to me, dearest Alice,7
I will make my will to-night.8
First for Mabel, who will never9
Let the dust of future years10
Dim the thought of me, but keep it11
Brighter still—perhaps with tears ;12
In whose eyes whate’er I glance at,13
Touch, or praise, will always shine,14
Through a strange and sacred radiance,15
By Love’s charter, wholly mine ;16
She will never lend another17
Slenderest link of thought I claim,18
I will therefore to her keeping,19
Leave my memory and my name.20
Bertha will do truer service21
To her kind than I have done,22
So I leave to her young spirit23
The long work I have begun.24
Well ! the threads are tangled, broken,25
And the colours do not blend,26
She will lend her earnest striving,27
Both to finish and amend :28
And, when it is all completed,29
Strong with care and rich with skill,30
Just because my hands began it,31
She will love it better still.32
Ruth shall have my dearest token,33
The one link I dread to break,34
The one duty that I live for,35
She, when I am gone, will take.36
Sacred is the trust I leave her,37
Needing patience, prayer, and tears,38
I have striven to fulfil it,39
As she knows, these many years.40
Sometimes hopeless, faint, and weary,41
Yet a blessing shall remain42
With the task, and Ruth will prize it43
For my many hours of pain.44
What must I leave for my Alice ?45
Nothing, love, to do or bear,46
Nothing that can dim your blue eyes47
With the slightest cloud of care ;48
I will leave my heart to love you49
With the tender faith of old,50
Still to comfort, warm, and light you,51
Should your life grow dark or cold :52
No one else, my child, can claim it ;53
If you find old scars of pain,54
They were only wounds, my darling,55
There is not, I trust, one stain.56
Are my gifts indeed so worthless57
Now the slender sum is told ?58
Well ! I know not ; years may bless them59
With a nobler price than gold.60
Am I poor ?  Ah, no, most wealthy !61
Not in these poor gifts you take,62
But in the true hearts that tell me63
You will keep them for my sake.64
