The Recall

A Dream of the Ghetto

So far he led them through the Wilderness,1
That not in dreams alone, he saw the Land2
Long-promised : his it was at last, to stand3
Humbly exalted—free from fears and stress,4
And view the Distance without bitterness,5
Beneath the Shadow of God’s outstretched Hand :6
And then, God touched him, making just, and grand7
His Sleep, in its consummate loneliness.8
Who would grudge death, if he might lead as far9
As Moses led his flock, these sore distrest10
Outcasts on alien hills ?  Loveless, unblest,11
They prove each halting-place their griefs debar12
From yielding rest : but where the fig-trees are,13
And palms, Peace whispers,— Children, Home is best ! ”14
