Via Umbræ.
With sunset glory glowing1
Were hill and sky and sea ;2
The night-wind soft was blowing,3
It whispered low to me.4
And old hopes almost blighted5
By Sorrow’s trembling tears,6
Once more with glory lighted7
The Pathway of the years.8
They came, ’mid evening splendour,9
That shone across the sea ;10
And Love, with look so tender,11
Again did beckon me :12
And far the stretching ocean13
Of sunset, trembling gold,14
Reflected my emotion—15
The soul-deep thoughts of old.16
It passed, and glory faded17
From hill and sky and sea :18
The Pathway, deeply shaded,19
Was all it left to me.20
