Castles in Spain ! oft in my youthful pride,1
When virile fancy widespread wings hath ta’en,2
Thy sun-kissed turrets have I clear descried :3
Castles in Spain !4
And if ’neath toil-spent years faith ’gan to wane,5
Still I gazed forth with hope, nor did I chide,6
Seeking stray sunbeams through the mist and rain.7
Frail hopes borne seawards on the lapsing tide8
Fade faint and far from me with sad refrain ;9
Into the brooding night they softly glide :10
