‘ Amour Qui Sourit Caché.’

I thought my heart was quite burnt out,1
Reduced to merest ashes;2
I found a spark to light it up3
Beneath those drooping lashes.4
A courtship strange: few words of love5
Between us two were spoken;6
Our hearts met through our meeting lips7
And got mixed up and broken.8
Scarce had we met—in a gay crowd,9
Perhaps ne’er to meet hereafter,10
We had to part, with lips that laughed,11
And tears beneath the laughter.12
