Defton Wood.

I held my way through Defton Wood,1
And on to Wandor Hall ;2
The dancing leaf let down the light,3
In hovering spots to fall.4
O young, young leaves, you match me well,”5
My heart was merry, and sung6
Now wish me joy of my sweet youth ;7
My love—she, too, is young !8
O so many, many, many9
Little homes above my head !10
O so many, many, many11
Dancing blossoms round me spread !12
O, so many, many, many13
Maidens sighing yet for none !14
Speed, ye wooers, speed with any15
Speed with all but one.”16
I took my leave of Wandor Hall,17
And trod the woodland ways.18
What shall I do so long to bear19
The burden of my days ?”20
I sighed my heart into the boughs21
Whereby the culvers cooed ;22
For only I between them went23
Unwooing and unwooed.24
O, so many, many, many25
Lilies bending stately heads !26
O, so many, many, many27
Strawberries ripened on their beds !28
O, so many, many, many29
Maids, and yet my heart undone !30
What to me are all, are any31
I have lost my—one.”32
