The Man with Three Friends. A Story told in the ‘Gesta Romanorum’

Figure descriptions
Three shirtless men walk along a path. One man leads the other two. He holds a sword over his shoulder and grasps a rope which has been used to bind the hands of one of the other men. The two men behind him walk barefoot. The man with bound hands hunches over and the second man, Christ, embraces him. Light emanates from Christ’s body, and he wears a crown of thorns. Two armed soldiers follow the men from behind. They wear armour and hold spears over their shoulders. A veiled woman hunches beside the soldiers in the shadows. A nude child stands by her feet and tugs at her clothing. There are jagged rocks along the path and cliffs in the background. A human skull and bones lie in an adjacent field. Birds fly high in the sky. Full-page illustration contained within a single-ruled border.
