Sir “ Cockey” Denman.

This is the Den-man—Sir “ Cockey” the wise—1
Oh when will the people open their eyes ?2
When ! when will the people treat with disdain3
Those fellows who rob them and laugh at their pain ?4
I saw a man pretend to be5
The advocate of Liberty—6
I see him, in his power elate,7
Uphold the evils of the State ;8
And, false to Freedom, aid the men9
Who curse their fellows. When ! oh, when10
Will men be wise, and sweep away11
The pagod things they now obey ?12
In by-gone days when honest men were bold,13
The laws were made to fix their happiness :14
That time is past—and soul-debasing gold15
Has turn’d them to a scourge the humble to oppress.16
By Law injustice triumphs over Right !17
Dishonest laws have spurn’d bright Reason’s sway !18
These black-rob’d reptiles that offend the sight,19
Before pure Justice triumphs, must be swept away !20
The coat of mail was once the murd’rers cloak,21
And misled millions called them heroes brave ;22
But now base lawyers the bright sword have broke,23
Aud unjust men by law send millions to the grave.24
But sure the time must come when every pen25
Will battle bravely till the truth appear ;26
When the loud cries of countless murder’d men27
Shall ring a horrid peal in the Attorney’s ear.28
The blood-dyed robes that on his shoulders hang,29
Are but a mark of infamy and shame ;30
Justice must sweep away the plundering gang,31
E’er lawyer is a word for honest men to name.32
Soon may the guardian of the people’s rights,33
The mighty press, curb the unholy clan ;34
Then shall the People find their lost delights,35
And turn, with scorn, from the false and heartless Den-man.36
