Oh balm of nature to the mind opprest,1
Descend and calm the tumults of my breast;2
Bind with Oblivion’s veil these wakeful eyes,3
And still the varying passions as they rise;4
While airy dreams, in Fancy’s fictious light,5
Sport in the gloomy darkness of the night;6
And a bright Angel, borne on silver wings,7
To heaven’s high arch his song of triumph sings:8
Oh, sleep! descend, and, on thy downy breast,9
Lull, with thy poppy wreath, my soul to rest!10
