The Way to Babylon.
Comrade, now the dawn is nigh,1
Light is veiling every star—2
Pale against the paling sky3
Gleams a pinnacle afar :4
Where the earth and sky are one,5
Comrade, it is Babylon.6
Comrade, now the noonday blaze7
Beats upon us as we go ;8
Yet I see a city’s maze9
Grey against the fiery glow,10
Shadowy walls, and streams that run11
’Neath the walls of Babylon.12
Comrade, had we ever guessed13
Half the weary miles between !14
Now the sun is near the west,15
Now the trees the city screen :16
Ends the journey, long begun,17
We are nearing Babylon.18
Comrade, now the night grows late,19
In the darkness, we must be20
Very near the city gate,21
Where is room for thee and me.22
Rest we now till morning sun :23
We shall wake at Babylon.24
