Painter, illustrator, designer, and arts administrator. Born in Paris. Studied the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with James McNeill Whistler, George du Maurier, and Thomas Reynolds Lamont. Returned to England in 1860. Contributed to London Society and the Bible Gallery (1880) by the Dalziel brothers. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and Dudley Gallery. Married Agnes Macdonald (sister of Alice Kipling and Georgiana Burne-Jones) on 9 August 1866. Slade professor at University College, London (1871-1875). Appointed director of the National Art Training School in 1875. Elected Royal Academician in 1876. Director of the National Gallery (1894-1904), President of the Royal Academy (1896-1918).
