Member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, formed in 1848, and associated with the movement his whole life. Longtime employee of the Excise Office from 1845-1894. An admirer and biographer of Percy Shelley, authoring many articles about him for The Athenaeum, as well as a multi-volume memoir.
