Duff Gordon. Daughter of translator and author Lucie Duff Gordon. Born in London. Closely connected with major figures in literary and artistic circles including Caroline Norton, William Makepeace Thackeray, Amelia Opie, Charles Babbage, and Tom Taylor. Moved to Dresden to learn German, and then to Paris to learn French. Married Henry James Ross on 5 December 1860. Moved to Egypt in 1861 and became Egyptian correspondent for The Times.
