Poet and journalist. Born in Morden Hill, Blackheath. Son of James Traill and Caroline Whateley. Educated at Merchant Taylors’ School, London, and St John’s College, Oxford. Called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1869. Worked as a journalist for several publications, mostly the Pall Mall Gazette, St. James’s Gazette, and Daily Telegraph. Married Emily Mitchell on 20 January 1879. Publications include several books on British culture and politics, biographies of other writers and political figures, and some plays, most notably The Medicine Man (1898).
