Poet, philosopher, and historian. Born in Peebles. Father was a soldier. Married Eliza Hill Wilson on 17 June 1862. Studied theology at the University of Edinburgh. Professor of logic at St. Andrew’s University (1860-1864) and the University of Glasgow (1864-1894). Author of Hillside Rhymes (1872), The Tweed, and Other Poems (1875), Merlin and Other Poems (1889), as well as The History and Poetry of the Scottish Border (1893).
