Poet and literary critic. Born in Yorkshire. Fought to have Aubrey Beardsley removed as art editor of the Yellow Book after Oscar Wilde’s arrest. Considered a strong contender for the poet laureateship after the death of Alfred Lord Tennyson. Married Adeline Maureen Pring on 11 August 1909. Contributed to the National Review. Author of several volumes of poetry including The Prince’s Quest and Other Poems (1880), Epigrams of Art, Life, and Nature (1884), The Purple East (1896), The Year of Shame (1897), The Hope of the World (1898), New Poems (1909),The Man who Saw and Other Poems Arising out of the War (1917).
