Travelled widely in United States, Europe, China, and India. Edited China Mail (1858-1860) while he lived in Hong Kong, and Times of India (1873). Converted to Buddhism while living in China. Published essays in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, and volume publications include The Abode of Snow: Observations on a Journey from Chinese Tibet to the Indian Caucasus,
