D.Born in Stockport. Father was a cotton spinner, and then a manufacturer, and was ordained in 1869. Educated at Stockport grammar school and St. John’s College, Cambridge (where he read mathematics). Ordained in 1860, but in 1865 gave up holy orders to become a school teacher. Author of Poems (1859), Dryope and Other Poems (1861), Pictures, and Other Poems (1865), The Sorrows of Hypsipyle (1867), Songs then and Now (1876), Songs of a Year (1888).
