Poet, diarist, hedonist, and Arab horse breeder. Pseudonym: Proteus. Married Anne Blunt, the 15th Baroness of Wentworth and granddaughter of Lord Byron, in 1869. Travelled extensively around Europe and South America as the Secretary of Legation, and the Middle East, India, and Egypt, after which he and his wife brought back Arabian horses to breed at Crabbet Arabian Stud, established in 1858.
